Economic Development Commission Minutes
April 18, 2017
-----------------------------------------------------------

The Workforce Task Force has also discussed internship and partnering through the school.
Commissioner Lindholm stated he wrote a letter and sent it out to over 300 businesses
district-wide. There were only 3 replies. The public outcry is that we need this, but no one
wants to participate. What is said in the public arena and those willing to step up are separate
issues.

The Quality of Life Task Force will be bringing their concepts to the Steering Committee
tomorrow.

6. School Update

Commissioner Lindholm stated they approved funding for a new scoreboard. The
scoreboard can now be moved. The schematic indicates the opportunity for advertisements.

7. Chamber Update

Jenna Crawford reported the Chamber is busy getting ready to plan for summer events. They
have been tasked for more Bean Hole Days activities. They are trying to jazz up the burying
of the beans, possibly having a picnic with food booths.

They also were approved to move the fireworks to Our Savior’s Cemetery.

They are also looking a pooling marketing dollars with local communities.

8. BLAEDC Update

Sheila Haverkamp reported she had met with Nancy Malecha regarding development of the
85 acres south of Derksen Road. Chuck Marohn had provided a report on expansion of a
business park several years ago that contained great information.

Ms. Haverkamp provided a handout that shared ideas and a potential path to consider in
exploring a long-term vision for the 85 acres. We would need to engage a consultant to
design for each of the land use ideas contained in the handout. They would provide a
schematic. Or we could develop an RFP and request people to submit proposals for
consideration.

The EDC needs to engage the Council to set a vision and engage in the whole process. How
do we get the City Council up to speed on funding mechanisms? This could be included on
the May EDC Agenda.

Ms. Haverkamp also brought up the odor issues. How do we address it? How long does it
last?

Chair Jurchen reminded everyone to get Agenda items to Nancy Malecha as soon as possible.
