0
Pec not
NEW BUSINESS—SPECIFIC SERVICE SIGNS,DISCUSSION
Agenda Item: 7(c)
Background Information: The City Council has directed the Planning
Commission to review the Land Use Ordinance and develop a plan for directional
service signs along Patriot Avenue. The need for this type of sign arose when
Tasty Pizza requested a Specific Service Sign on State Highway 371. MN/DOT
notified Tasty Pizza that they would need to receive permission from the City for
a directional sign from Patriot Avenue toward County Road 168 and permission
for a directional sign from Crow Wing County from County Road 168 toward
Peterson Path.
The Land Use Ordinance does not regulate any signage in the right-of-way. The
directional signs would be placed in right-of-way. However, after several
discussions there could be numerous directional signs requested and the
Planning Commission should make a recommendation based on the Downtown
Plan and Comprehensive Plan. The Council has requested the recommendation
by September 5, 2017.
Staff will provide an explanation of the Specific Service Signs along the
Expressway using the map on the wall at the meeting. Staff will also demonstrate
where directional signs may be needed in addition to the one for Tasty Pizza.
Crow Wing County's Policy for Specific Service Signs is attached, as well as the
portion of Chapter 6 of the Minnesota Department of Transportation Traffic
Engineering Manual that refers to Specific Service Signs.
Pequot Lakes Staff Report 7(c)-1
July 20,2017
