M
Ms. Dawn Bittner
Page 2
October 12, 2011
unique well number and well construction for each well that will be included in the amended wellhead
protection plan [Table 1], 2) lists the pumping volumes for each well [Table 2], 3) lists permitted high -
capacity wells that may influence the delineation, and 4) includes a map of the well locations. A
summary of the information the city needs to provide is included at the end of the. Scoping Decision
Notice No. I form.
As discussed during our meeting, MDH staff will be arranging to collect water samples from your two
wells for tritium, stable isotopes, and a couple of other general chemistry parameters that will assist us
in better characterizing the aquifer serving your wells. MDH will cover the laboratory costs. As
explained during our meeting, the turn- around time for the tritium analyses will be several months.
The water quality results will be incorporated into your amended plan.
We also discussed the work you have already done to locate wells in the drinking water supply
management area as part of wellhead plan implementation. We will continue to work with you to be
sure the well location information is entered into the County Well Index (CWI) database. The well
location information will be very useful as we move forward to amend Part I of your wellhead plan.
Finally, it is our understanding that you will serve officially as wellhead protection manager on behalf
of the city of Pequot Lakes. You are responsible for providing written notice to local units of
government of the city's intent to amend their Wellhead Protection Plan, as required by the wellhead
protection rule (part 4720.5300, subpart 3). A copy of this notice should be forwarded to MDH and
-- must include listing the public wells, the unique well numbers, and contact information for you as
wellhead protection manager. Mark Wettlaufer, your Source Water Protection Unit Planner, can
provide you with some examples of the notification of intent that other systems have used if you do not
have a copy of your original notice of intent. Mark can be contacted at 320/223 -7342 or by email at
mark.wettlaufer @state.mn.us .
In closing, we look forward to working with you on the completion of your amended wellhead
protection plan. If you have any questions regarding our comments, please contact me by phone
(651/201 -4691) or via email at gail.haglund @state.mn.us.
Sincerely,
Gail Haglund, Hydrologist
Environmental Health Division
P.O.
