Our current group of Explorers seems to be falling away in attendance at meetings, trainings, and
fire calls. We need to regroup and establish the program with new ideas and policies. Our previous
members are involved with many activities and seem to have moved on.
Highway construction crews have returned to work on the by-pass project. The County Road 16
junction with State Highway 371 has been closed to allow the finishing of the new alignment.
Sometime in May traffic will be diverted to the new northbound lane of the bypass route so work
can proceed on the old existing southbound lane.
The City of Pequot Lakes will acquire ownership of the land adjoining the bypass and County Road
11 junction along with the Mathoweitz construction well. The well was planned to be abandoned
when the highway construction was completed. The well produces 520 gallon water per minute and
is valued at$29,000.00.This should be an asset to the Fire Department and the City. The process of
acquiring the well began when Mark from Northland Well Drilling Company thought the well was
too valuable to abandon and contacted firefighters. The Mayor was informed of the idea and
proceedings developed.
Our Department was awarded a matching grant from the DNR last summer to help purchase a
pump and tank slip in unit for our Breezy Station 2 Polaris Ranger. The unit has the capabil;ity to
fight grass/brush fires and carry an injured person. The total cost of the project is$6165.00.It will
be financed by the DNR 50/50 matching grant for$3600.00 and the$2500.00 donation from the
Pelican Lakes Conservation Club. The balance will be covered by the fire fighters pancake fund.
The Department plans to celebrate our 100th anniversary by hosting a street dance on Saturday,
August 5th,from 8:00 pm to midnight. The event will begin with a family celebration plan with
Pequot Lakes summer concert"Muddy Waters"band taking the stage from 6 to 8 pm.Food trucks
are planned to be there to serve food. Pequot Lakes Community Action will be serving beer and
root beer along with help from the Department. The adult plan will start with the"Wyld Ryce"band
playing from 8 to 12 pm.They played for previous street dances sponsored by the Department in
the 1980's.There will be no cover charge for the dance but the Department will accept donations.
The Department also plans to create a 100th anniversary logo with the assistance from the graphic
arts students from CLC. Plans are to sell shirts and possibly other items using the logo. These ideas
may be altered as more planning sessions take place.
Comments were made from Board members seeing Twin City television stations reporting the the
fire fighter cancer issue earlier in the year. There could be more developments on the issue.
Next meeting will be July 26th at the fire station at 7 pm.
With no more comments, the meeting was declared adjourned.
PRESENT AT MEETING: Benson, Dubay,Sodd, Nelson, Peterson,Olson,Westerberg, Bartels,Mayor
Adams, Mayor Lilllehei,&Administrator Rudberg
