PEQUOT LAKES AREA FIRE BOARD
MEETING MINUTES JANUARY 25,2017
The annual meeting of the PLAFB was called to order by Chairman Peterson. The minutes of the last
meeting were not read.
The fourth quarter fire call report was discussed. There were 19 calls during this time period
compared to 14 last year during this time. There was one structure fire that was billed.
Training during the past quarter totaled 20 hours. The December 2e training topic incident
command along with first on the scene radio report keyed on first arrival fire fighters painting a
picture for other responding personnel so they are aware of the situation and can plan their
strategy. This class was taught by Bruce West, the current State Fire Marshal for the State of
Minnesota. The session was a memorable event for our Pequot Lakes fire fighters.
The fourth quarter and annual financial report was next on the agenda. The certifications and
contract services items were not interpreted as intended by Chief Nelson when the bills were
coded. Some items labeled in the contract services should have been in the certifications
designation. This would have the effect of balancing the categories so they would be more
accurate.Chairman Peterson commended Chief Nelson for his precise ability to budget our
Department's finances. Bartels motioned to approve the report, second by Sodd, motion passed.
The personnel and operations topic listed resignations from the Department forJory Carlson and
Ian Ulrich.Purchases included an upgrade kit for our strut rescue package which consists of a tripod
and jack for specialty rescue situations. The kit was financed by leftover funds from the Legion
Auxiliary dinner and the anonymous donation.A lit up fire truck participated in the Pequot
Chamber's"Light Up the Night"parade.Erich Olson&Casey Emans completed their respective year
of probation.Timberjacks Smokehouse&Saloon hosted our department's holiday party last
weekend.Jake Cameron was recognized for making the most fire calls for 2016. Daren Nordby was
awarded the prestigious honor as"Firefighter of the Year"for 2016. He was able to achieve a
noticeable increase in his fire call attendance and has diligently worked to get donations of food
and refreshments for our annual open house and pancake breakfast.
The long time project of acquiring new air masks(SCBA's)will soon be completed.City Council has
approved purchase of 20 new air masks and 40 air bottles. The Department had applied for several
grants to fund the purchase without any success. The project's cost is about$135,000.00 and will be
locally financed over 5 years with a competitive rate from First National Bank of Pequot Lakes.
Donations received include$500.00 from the Sons of American Legion(SAL),and$100.00 each from
John Hayes&Craig&Clare Nagel.
The Department paid Megan Nelson her 2016 scholarship award.
There were no changes during the election of Officers for the Department's 2017 year.
The 2016 annual fire department report features data including fire call listing, breakdown of types
of calls, listing of calls locations, breakdown of hourly use during fire calls, report of fire bills sent,
