City of Pequot Lakes WIDSETH
December 27,2016 SMITH
Page 2 of 2 , NOLTING
We are—and enjoy being-a part of the Pequot Lakes area community. For example,I have been participating in
the Thriving Communities Initiative(again,no charge to the City). Our owners, employees, and families live,
work, shop,go to school, recreate, volunteer, and pay taxes in this area.City tax dollars that are used for our
services go right back into this area.
Unlike many of our competitors,WSN is not a firm of regional offices that reports back to a headquarters in
another part of the state. We have about 60 employees in our Brainerd/Baxter office. No other firm can offer that
kind of direct and immediate service to the City.We have people that are less than 1/2 hour away that can provide
their expertise—even with today's communication technology, there is no substitute for face-to-face assistance.
Any service related to public infrastructure planning, funding, design, and construction that the City needs—and
we can forward many pages spelling these out-we can provide.
Funding assistance is one of our many service areas. We not only help cities in finding grants and loans for
infrastructure improvements, but we also assist Fire Departments(in fact,we worked with your Fire Dep't).
We want to continue to work with the City on your yearly street and utility(water and wastewater)projects.
Attached are our business/budget status reports on the Pequot Boulevard Construction and Wastewater
Treatment Irrigation Construction projects. The first is a good example of having City staff take care of as much
construction as their time allows, and the second shows how we can adjust our effort based on budget concerns
from the City Council.
We want to continue to work with the City on improvements in the coming years due to the changes being
brought about by the new Highway 371 project.Having worked with several City Councils on the history of and
various agreements for this project,we can bring forth ideas and expertise as the City addresses new
opportunities.Attached are our business/budget status reports for two projects that we helped the City on related
to Highway 371 and its changes—the Highway 371 Master Utility Agreement(MUA)and Maintenance Facility
Study projects. The first is another good example of working with City staff,as well as the construction
contractor,on right-sizing our effort. The second shows that we will keep working with the City Council on
several iterations—and even though we will probably internally go over budget, since the scope did not materially
change, the City does not have to pay any more than we agreed to.
Please NOTE that we want to—we need to-improve on the services we offer you.If you would like to meet with
us,we are always available.
We look forward to continuing our past working relationship and being of service to you in 2017.
WIDSETH SMITH NOLTING&ASSOCIATES,INC.
Timothy M.Houle,PE
Civil Engineer I Vice President
