PEQUOT LAKES PARK COMMISSION MEETING THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 2010 CITY HALL Members Present: Chair Tweed, Commissioners, Johnson, and Clement Members Absent: Commissioner Jurchen and DenHartog Also Present: Council Member Malecha; Sandy Peine, City Clerk; Mike Loven, Public Works Supervisor; Sue Galligan — Chamber of Commerce 1. Call Meeting to Order The meeting was called to order at 4:00 p.m. by Chair Tweed 2. Approve Park Commission Minutes COMMISSIONER JOHNSON MOVED TO APPROVE THE APRIL 3, 2010, PARK COMMISSION MINUTES. COMMISSIONER CLEMENT SECONDED THE MOTION. MOTION CARRIED 3-0. 3. Bicycle Friendly Community Sue Galligan from the Chamber of Commerce spoke about a Bicycle Summit that she attended which focused on what can be done to make a bicycle friendly community. Sue offered some suggestions such as camping, lodging and restaurant signs, designated lanes for bicyclists, bicycle racks and benches for the bikers. Sue talked about working toward becoming a hub location for bicyclists and to promote Pequot Lakes as a destination for riders to stay. The Park Commission suggested better signage along the Paul Bunyan Trail and the need for more garbage cans. Sue said she would be talking to the DNR about better signage, however, the DNR has stated that garbage cans along the trail would be a city issue. Sue stated that the Chamber wants to work with City and Park Commission toward this endeavor. The Commission concurred that this was important and stated that when future projects are considered, the Commission will also take into consideration bicyclists. The Commission asked about grant money. Sue suggested going to the web site Bicyclefriendlycommunity.org to look for grant opportunities. Sue informed the Park Commission that Pequot Lakes is hosting the MS Tram in July which will bring 1,000 bicyclists in town.
