❑ Restrict development along slopes that have high erosion potential, requiring minimum setbacks
from slope edges.
❑ Mitigate effects of development in high erosion areas by requiring the use of erosion control mats,
silt fences, gravel berms, and trenches during construction.
❑ Retain and manage native vegetation cover in areas with high erosion potential.
❑ Restrict new water oriented accessory structures within the shoreline setback zone.
❑ Regulate boat canopies, boat lifts, and docks for the purpose of maintaining the natural appearance -
ofthe shoreline. c
❑ Encourage design standards to ensure that new buildings fit in with and do not detract from the J
character of the natural landscape and existing neighborhoods.
❑ Establish shoreline preservation standards to limit clearing of vegetation along shorelines. Make the
issuance of permits contingent on meeting these standards. Start an education program to make
people aware that permits are needed for construction and landscaping along shorelines.
❑ Enact a"night sky'ordinance to limit the amount and character of signs and lighting for rural and
urban areas within Pequot Lakes.
❑ Regulate the use of rip rap on lakeshore properties through an ordinance ensuring its effective use.
Mid-Term Actions (1-5 years):
❑ Develop an integrated forest management plan for privately and publicly owned forests in Pequot
Lakes to ensure their long-term ecological and economic viability. Such a plan should address D
forest health protection,and the management of timber,wildlife,hazard trees,street trees,resource
preservation,and forest recreation opportunities.
❑ Establish 1000-foot natural buffers around rare plant and animal species, wildlife habitat, core or
old growth forest patches, lakes, wetlands, and streams.Within the buffers, maintain and improve
native vegetation and regulate future development.
❑ Continue and improve the City recycling and litter management program.
❑ Regulate and monitor landfills and buried storage tanks, especially in areas with high risk of
groundwater contamination.
❑ Consider mandatory compliance inspections for all existing systems over a set period of time and \,,J
establish a record-keeping system for monitoring compliance.
❑ Support the installation of a storm sewer system in the downtown area and other high density urban
areas.
❑ Identify and protect wildlife corridors linking forest patches, using riparian systems when possible.
❑ Decrease the amount of waste running directly into streams and lakes by supporting county officials
and other agencies in identifying and mitigating failing or substandard on-site septic systems,
polluted wells, livestock feed lots, and other agricultural operations.
❑ Reduce surface run-off and sedimentation from roads and impervious surface in new plats by
requiring bioretention ponds, berms, swales,or filter strips. Stormwater management techniques
must be prepared by a certified engineer and shown in detail on all development proposals. '_
❑ In areas without municipal sewer, encourage new plats to seek alternative septic systems such as
waterless systems,grinder/pump systems and joint sewer treatment cooperatives. Provide
information on these alternatives to landowners/developers.
❑ Pursue ecologically responsible alternatives to snow removal such as a salt-free winter road 2003
maintenance policy.
❑ Work with ATV and snowmobile clubs to consolidate and map trail systems that don't disrupt
residential or environmentally sensitive areas.
❑ Encourage currently developed properties to reestablish natural buffers on lakes, wetlands, rivers,
roads and forests.
Pequot Lakes Vision 2025
