Partner with other public entities owning undeveloped property in Pequot Lakes to create a
coordinated plan for future recreational use. The integration ofpublic land could greatly ,
enhance recreation opportunities in Pequot Lakes. City parks,State forests, and County and State o >£
■-" trails can add connections for all kinds of recreation. It is essential for the City to coordinate
preservation of public space for future use. Now is the time to possess the foresight before Pequot
Lakes fmds all open space completed divided out and privately owned.
Maintain private resorts and facilities for public recreational use. Private recreation facilities
s
act to provide balance for a variety of income levels. Due to this fact, they should be encouraged tom
continue the trend of offering affordable recreation options for families. Since private facilities are , 1
currently the only way for some residents and visitors to have access to water, the City should try to
maintain their existence. This can be accomplished by providing incentives to private recreational h
-1 411:0,:-;', ,
owners to maintain the existing public recreational use on their property. .
Seek to increase the existing recreational resource base and to connect all new and existing
recreational features and facilities. Recreational activities and use of facilities by both residents
and non-residents has increased significantly in recent years, but the resource base available has C
,i
actually decreased. Most of this recreation takes place on the limited amount of public lands and 04
waters. Thus, preservation of key recreational features must be a component of all new develop-
ments. The City must take advantage of opportunities to expand and connect existing and future o
outdoor recreational facilities.
'iST 4474#1
Actions
s
,... Short-Term Actions (within 1 year): €
❑ Charge the City's Parks and Recreation Committee with directing the implementation of these
strategies.
❑ Reevaluate the requirement of park dedication fees in new subdivisions and planned unit - '-
developments.
CI Inventory and catalogue all public land parcels in the City and seek to expand recreational uses on y , N'°
these parcels. i 1
❑ Partner with the school district to coordinate activities and explore indoor recreational opportunities.
Mid-Term Actions (1-5 years):
❑ Work with local Lake Associations to regulate water surface use on City lakes by establishing no- -
wake zones,traffic management strategies,and time-of-day use restrictions.
❑ Work with the State and County to allocate land for additional City parks, natural areas, and
greenways. 1 i,
❑ Carefully mark and protect existing trail right-of-way so the trail system can be permanently
protected and easily managed as the City grows and develops.
❑ Require trail right-of-way in new developments where trail connections are needed. :' '„
❑ Consider making Grant-In-Aid trails available for summer as well as winter use.
❑ Create reasonable public access to the lake resources through voluntary agreements with private 2003
commercial land owners.
❑ Encourage non-boat use of lake resources by providing scenic overlooks, shoreland walkways, and
fishing piers.
65
Pequot Lakes Vision 2025
