Dear Carla,
I will be forwarding this request to the Park Commission. This commission
has taken the lead in planting memorials. Unfortunately the Commission only
meets once per month. The next meeting will be on July 12th. We will discuss
your request and then get back to you.
Sandy Peine, City Clerk
4638 County Road 11, Pequot Lakes, MN 56472
218-568-5222 (office) 218-568-5860 (fax)
speine @pequotlakes-mn.gov
www.pequotlakes-mn.gov
Original Message
From: nelso081@umn.edu [mailto:nelso081 @umn.edul
Sent: Sunday, June 24, 2012 8:20 PM
To: Sandy Peine
Cc: nelso081 @umn.edu
Subject: Request for Information Re: Memorial Possibilities in Pequot Lakes
to Honor Mom
Hello Sandy,
My mother, Margaret (Skog) Nelson, was born and raised in Pequot Lakes. She
passed away in November at the age of 87. Of the 8 children in her family,
her only remaining sibling, Fred Skog, resides in Pequot Lakes with his
wife, Bev. Their father, Carl ("Charlie") Skog, is responsible for much of
the beautiful stone masonry in the Pequot Lakes area, including Breezy
Point Resort and Shawano, a private residence on Sibley Lake that is listed
on the National Register of Historic Places. In her later years Mom often
spoke of wanting to return to Pequot Lakes; unfortunately, her failing
health made that impossible.
My brother (Jeff Nelson) and sister (Linda Axell) and I plan to bury some
of Mom's ashes alongside Mom's family members in the Our Saviors Cemetery
in Pequot Lakes this summer or fall. We would also like to find a way to
memorialize Mom in Pequot Lakes with a tree or flower garden sometime in
the next year or so. In my communications with Mayor Adams earlier this
year, it appears the tree might be our best option. If at all possible, we
would like the memorial to be a part of the All Veterans Memorial Park in
Pequot Lakes where my uncles' (Mom's brothers) are recognized. It would be
wonderful if a tree or garden planted in Mom's memory could help decorate
the place where her brothers' service is honored (John, James, Arvid and
Frederick Skog. She loved them with all her heart, and it would mean so
much to her, and to her family.
We understand that there are rules and regulations involved in such a
prospect and we will be fully respectful of these rules and regulations. If
you would please provide us with information (and paperwork) we would need
to proceed With our wish to memorialize Mom in Pequot Lakes, we would very
much appreciate it. If this request should go to someone else, please feel
`.. free to forward this communication to that person.
