Training Opportunity for Planning & Zoning Officials
"Planning for Planners"
Saturday, April 7, 2001
9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Nisswa Community Center
For over five years the"Lakes Area" of Crow Wing and Cass Counties have been experiencing
rapid development that has at times outstripped the capacity of our communities to respond as
carefully and thoughtfully as we would wish. The rapid pace of development has placed a special
burden on the professional, elected, and/or citizen representatives that guide or serve on our area's
Planning Boards, Zoning Boards, City Councils, and County Commissioners. Although outstanding
technical and legal support is available from professional associations such as the Minnesota
Association of Counties (MAC) and the Minnesota Coalition of Planning and Zoning
Administrators (MCPZA) these opportunities are not always provided locally; at the time or day of
week which accommodates the needs of citizens, or for other reasons did not meet the needs of all
interested persons.
For the past month representatives of the informal "Area Planners Group" have been discussing an
agenda and format to bring planning leaders together based on shared knowledge, and to further
identify how continuing support might be best provided. Attendance will be free, but advance
registration is required and is limited to the first 75 requests received.
Session attendees will receive:
• A free copy of the Planning Con rnissioner Journal's "Welcome to the Commission,"
• Lunch,
• And variety of training including "How to communicate effectively,"meeting procedures,
sustainable development practices, and legal foundations of planning and zoning.
We will also poll the group to assess the format, timing, themes, and frequency in which attendees
would like to receive future training.
To be added to the mailing list for this program or to make reservations contact Nancy Vernon
Joslin at skyhigh@a,emily.com, or call (218) 763-1824. Thank you to The Initiative Foundation and
the Rivers Council of Minnesota through the"Voices for the Land"Project for their support of this
workshop.
