5) The Paul Bunyan State Trail right-of-way preserves remnants of the native Minnesota
landscape. Trails and Waterways is in the process of retaining a consultant to survey
plant communities along the Paul Bunyan Trail. The segment of trail proposed for
relocation through this backage road proposal contains vegetation endemic to prairie,
pine savanna, and oak barrens plant communities, including the presence of orchids. If
the Paul Bunyan Trail right-of-way is disturbed through a backage roads proposal, then
environmental impacts will need to be documented and appropriately mitigated.
Restoration of the native plant communities may result in activities and costs beyond the
proposed tree replacement and the $1,000/acre unit seeding rates.
As mentioned above, these comments to the September 2000 backage roads proposal are
preliminary, and only relate to immediate impacts to the Paul Bunyan State Trail. Additional
review will need to be conducted by other DNR disciplines, and may evaluate secondary
environmental impacts. Further, Trails and Waterways may have additional comments based on
our continuing review of this and future proposals.
Meanwhile, please feel free to contact me with any comments or questions. Thank you for this
opportunity to review your proposal. We look forward to receiving future updates, plans and
proposals for this project.
Sin -
,
Michael Martinez
Paul Bunyan Trail Specialist
c: Tim Houle, WSN
Laurie Young,DNR Trails and Waterways Planning Supervisor
Mike North,DNR Region 3 Environmental Review
Angela Anderson,DNR Trails and Waterways Natural Communities Program Coordinat.
Tim Browning,DNR Region 3 Trails and Waterways Supervisor
