February 20, 2003
Len Kargel
P.O. Box 236
Pequot Lakes, MN 56472
Re: Drainage Issues
Dear Mr. Kargel,
We sent you a letter last month regarding the drainage issues on your property, but we
apparently had the incorrect address as the letter was returned. A copy of the previous
letter is included with this letter.
The Planning Commission reviewed the situation at your property. They have concluded
that there is nothing more that can be done with the Little Pine Plaza to reduce the runoff
from that property.
Other property owners have brought the same concerns you have raised to our attention.
The Commission has concluded that whatever stormwater issues you and others are
experiencing are the result of area-wide redevelopment trends. Redevelopment in the
entire downtown area has increased the amount of impervious surface and increased the
total amount of runoff. The problem is compounded with each new project.
The City is taking steps to address these problems in a comprehensive manner that does
not stifle much-needed development. The Planning Commission has recommended, and
the City Council has directed, that the City Engineer prepare a proposal to study and plan
downtown stormwater improvements. The goal of the plan would be to facilitate future
stormwater system construction along with advancing development.
Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns. If you have any further
questions or comments, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
CITY OF PEQUOT LAKES
Charles Marohn, PE
Planning and Zoning Administrator
Cc: Planning Commission
Dawn Bittner, Zoning Clerk
