MINUTES
LONG RANGE PLANNING COMMISSION
June 12, 2003
The meeting was called to order by Charles Marohn, Planning and Zoning
Administrator. Members present: Ryan Buell, Barb Sjoblad, Tom Adams, and
Cheryl Karnowski. General Public: David Kennedy and Justin Bolz-Andolshek.
Tom Ryan arrived later. Community Growth Institute: Beth Elliott.
Mr. Marohn explained the attached Economic Development Action Plan. He also
reported that he, Beth and Jen Aspengren, our Intern, had conducted a sidewalk
survey. It was conducted on a Tuesday afternoon, 1:30 to 3:00 at Super
America, Northern Food King and Lime Greenery. Two questions were asked
the participants:
1. What is your permanent zip code (from Pequot Lakes)?
2. The number of stops planned to make this trip to town?
Location % Local # Stops Planned
NFK 50 3.2
SA 28 1.2
Lime Greenery 8 3.9
They plan to conduct another survey on a Saturday at the same time and
locations. They also have other data to submit from this survey that they will
have available in the future.
The people in attendance then took part in a fun exercise in which they assumed
different roles as economic developers. A copy of this exercise is attached.
When this was completed, they were asked what would be beneficial in order for
new businesses to succeed, such as: tax increment financing, infrastructure,
access, zoning, technology, workforce, land for housing, quality schools, strong
service center, accessibility to regional center, roads, strong base business
community and raw land.
Respectfully submitted,
Dawn Bittner
Planning and Zoning Staff
