ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE <br /> NOVEMBER 20,2012 <br /> MEETING MINUTES <br /> MEMBERS PRESENT: Mark Jurchen, Cindy Roggenkamp, and Tommy Woog <br /> MEMBERS ABSENT: Barb Merritt and Cindy Rieck. <br /> ALSO PRESENT: Sheila Haverkamp, BLAEDC; Nancy Adams, Mayor; <br /> Jenna Crawford, Chamber; Dawn Bittner, Zoning <br /> Administrator. <br /> 1. Call Meeting to Order <br /> The meeting was called to order by Vice Chair Jurchen at 8:01 a.m. <br /> 2. Approval of Minutes <br /> Staff pointed out an error in location; the meeting was called to order at City Hall. <br /> Tommy Woog requested to add to the WAC/SAC Ordinance Update that after <br /> going through the process, the new program would be a lower cost than what it is <br /> today. <br /> TOMMY WOOG MOVED TO APPROVE THE OCTOBER 16,2012, EDC <br /> MINUTES,AS CORRECTED. CINDY ROGGENKAMP SECONDED <br /> THE MOTION. MOTION CARRIED 3-0. <br /> 3. Open Discussion—Brainstorming Ideas on Economic Development <br /> Sheila Haverkamp explained that Pequot Lakes has similar objectives as <br /> BLAEDC's funnel. Elements on how we accomplish that were discussed: <br /> • Local business support; <br /> • Positive environment—negativity can be detrimental. Negative attitudes may <br /> only exist in certain sectors; <br /> • Infrastructure/work force—What is the community foundation to support <br /> business development; <br /> • Fiber optics and telecommunications—Are there any gaps; <br /> • Small Cities Development Grant—Revisit housing stock in Pequot Lakes; <br /> • What is our work force—What is offered in high school? Trade and technical <br /> programs are needed, as well as health care and engineering. Our young <br /> people need career paths. There is a disconnect between education and career <br /> community. Create internship program with school; <br /> • Entrepreneurial development is key—We need to support initiatives; <br /> s...' • Existing businesses—We need expansion as well as retention; <br />
